If you will notice, Google actually does provide tools and educational material about search engine optimization, such as their Search Engine Optimization Starter's Guide. I think that if Google really hated SEO, they definitely won't do things like that. Again, just like Steve said, there are a lot of new providers and companies coming out the woodwork in this field. A reporter friend of mine referred to SEO as the "New Gold Rush". I think that that might be an adequate way to describe it. Looking back at the original gold rush, we see much the same thing as we do today in the SEO industry. Everyone is climbing on-board and trying to make their fortune.

Interestingly and also eerily, a majority of the new seo companies that are popping up were built and are owned by guys who use to be in the mortgage industry. These are the same guys responsible for a lot of the economic fallout that we are experiencing right now! Scary, huh?

But, anyway, I don't think Google hates SEO. Google and SEO just have 2 different goals in business. Google wants the good content on the first page for the user so that the user will keep coming back. SEO wants to get their clients on the first page so that they can get paid, regardless of whether their client's website content is good or not. It's just 2 clashing fields of Business.

Re: Does Google Hate SEO?

I think it has something to do with the dynamics of our industry and "TYPE" or "CATEGORY" of business Google includes.

For starters, there are so many providers popping in and out and so many participate in black hat tactics that Google has a hard building a sticky results page.

But more importantly, advertising agencies and marketing agencies (I Google'd both with an Irvine modifier) provide services nationwide. So it's a lot like doing a search for "computer training", a service that is typically provided online, even though there are actually brick and mortar schools that offer it.

I don't think they hate SEO's. I think it's just a category that doesn't best represent local search. But, you're right, it definitely feels that way, doesn't it? :)

Re: Top Ten Local Directories To List Businesses

For the most part, I agree w/ you Top 10 Local directories. Then again, the impact social is having on Local search and Local SEO, there's a few others I would add to the list.
